How do scientists do disease surveillance and study biodiversity through the lens of genomics? Citizen scientist Blacki Migliozzi joined a group of jungle field researchers to find out.
Through anecdotes and stunning photography he will walk us through what it's like to work with big cats, primates, birds, bats, frogs, snakes and many other kinds of organisms. He'll also provide first-hand observations of the habitat loss endangering these ecosystems as well as the dangers scientists put themselves in when doing this important work.
We're located in Suite 319, you may have to call/text the lab phone (7086371289) to enter.

Hi #science #research #mastodon community! A few days ago, a post of mine recieved a lot of attention. Thanks for the engagement and the very interesting suggestions! neuromatch.social/@LeonDLotter…
On #Twitter, I loved the common practice of writing threads explaining new #preprints and #papers in an understandable way.
I uttered my concern that through the chronological timeline here people might miss interesting science. A solution would be to agree on names for hashtags and/or a.gup.pe groups to ease tracking these "paper threads".
Following tags were named more then once: #newPaper #paperThread #preprint #researchPaper #mastoPrint #tootPrint.
Also, there was #tootorial, but that might be a slightly different category?
I heard people like participation - so let's do a poll! What's your favourite tag for threads explaining research articles? 📊 Multiple choices possible!

On #scienceTwitter, my favourite thing was reading and, on rare occasions, writing "paper/preprint threads". From the researchers I followed and through the #Twitter algorithm, this became my most important source for new #research.Neuromatch Social

Some plants can monitor #environmental #conditions around them and release #seeds at times #optimal for #dispersal.
#Dandelion seeds close up a bit in #wet #weather and don't travel as far as in their more open, #dry weather form. New #research (Seale et al. 2022) shows that dandelions hold on to seeds in wet weather and release them more in dry weather.
Do #plants exhibit #behavior? I would argue, yes.

Environmental morphing enables informed dispersal of the dandelion diaspore
The dandelion diaspore changes its shape depending on the moisture levels in the air, and this morphing enhances the dispersal potential of the seeds regardless of the weather conditions.Madeleine Seale (eLife Sciences Publications, Ltd)

The word “invasivore” is a portmanteau combining “invasive Species” with the Latin root “devorare” meaning to swallow (as in "herbivore" or “carnivore”). Thus, #invasivore = one who eats invasive species, those organisms that have been introduced around the world and cause massive environmental and economic damages.
Our website invasivore.org/ serves a buffet of knowledge about #invasivespecies. At the core of our approach are #recipes featuring invasive ingredients, but we also provide species profiles describing notorious invaders, harvesting tips, exposition and commentary on related topics, summaries of relevant #science and #research, and roundups (#InvasionBites!) of the latest #news and other media about invasive species.
We believe that #education and #awareness can decrease the impacts of invasions by controlling existing populations and preventing new introductions.
invasivore.org | consuming invasive species and invasion science
The word “invasivore” comes from combining “Invasive Species” with the latin for “devour” as in “carnivore”. Thus invasivore = one who eats invasive species and invasion science.invasivore.org

Amazingly, I am a part of an article submission today and a resubmission this week.
Neither article is my area of expertise, per se, but I made substantial contributions to both and learned a lot.
It's a great reminder that #science is a team sport. It's better and more productive to work together!
